British Rally News ~ PODIUM WIN FOR SEBASTIAN LING ON THE RALLY OF WALES

Sebastian, from Newcastle Emlyn, and his co-driver Ian Allsop, finished 2nd in The International Rally of Wales at Dolgellau at the weekend.

Sebastian said, "This was an important result as I did not finish The Welsh Rally last season and we wanted to start the championship with a strong performance." Prior to this event Sebastian had said he would be happy with a top 5 finish. This looked to be very ambitious after the first stage where gear box trouble saw him in 8th place. He did however improve in the second and third stages to move up to 6th place.

Nuneaton MG rally ace Matt Beebe got his 2005 season off to a flying start on the Wales Stars of the Future in the Panaround Rally.

After setting a blistering pace right from the start, he and co-driver Richard Devenport went on to set fastest stage time on every stage on their way to winning the first round of the MG X-Power ZR Championship. They were also victorious in Class N1, 3rd in the 1400cc Stars class and an impressive fifth overall in the Stars of the Future category.

After finishing an impressive second overall in the Tour of Cornwall last month, the double British Rally champion will be looking to go one better when the GPR MSA National Asphalt Rally Championship moves to the Isle of Man on May 6/7.

Late on Friday Kris Meeke mounted a spirited charge on the lead of the Junior World Rally Championship (JWRC) class of the Supermag Rallye Italia in Sardinia. Meeke, 25, from County Tyrone, Northern Ireland, has astounded onlookers with his pace after clawing back a chunk of the two minutes he lost through a puncture earlier in the day.

No fewer than seven Suzuki Ignis Super 1600 cars have taken the ceremonial start of the Rally d'Italia-Sardinia this evening, round three of the Junior World Rally Championship. The crews crossed the start ramp at the millionaire's resort of Porto Rotondo in front of thousands of excited Italian fans, before three days of flat-out gravel action over 17 stages and 350 kilometres.

WRC News ~ SUZUKI DRIVERS READY FOR THE ITALIAN JOB

The Rally d'Italia-Sardinia is round three of the Junior World Rally Championship, which is currently led by Suzuki Ignis driver Guy Wilks followed by his team mate P-G Andersson. The two Suzuki men will be looking to extend their advantage on the all-gravel event, but in the competitive environment of world rallying this is never an easy task.
Sardinia was new to the Junior World Rally Championship last season, but this year's event has a very different look to it. The rally is being held much earlier and the route has been substantially revised to make it faster, more open and even more spectacular for the thousands of passionate Italian fans.

• Difficult New Zealand rally for Škoda Fabia WRC 05
• WRC returns to Europe for second quarter of the season

Armin Schwarz ended the Rally of New Zealand in 10th place but team mate Janne Tuohino was denied a finish on his first visit to the event when the Škoda Fabia WRC 05 suffered a damaged turbo on the first stage of the final day. Janne limped through the stage but retired from the event before SS18 to prevent further engine damage. Janne’s retirement ended a frustrating rally for the Finn who had begun with a 50 seconds penalty when an ECU failure delayed his departure from first service to the opening stage and denied him the chance of a points finish on his first finish to New Zealand.

The new VX Racing Astra Sport Hatch made a successful race debut at the opening round of the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship at Donington Park this weekend, with Yvan Muller claiming the car's debut win, one second and one third place. Dave Johnson and his Xpress Racing team suffered mixed fortunes at the weekend which saw the 21-year-old from Leicester suffer a minor technical problem in the National Superstock Race forcing him to withdraw from 6th place. Looking strong and confident throughout practice and qualifying Johnson was looking comfortable in the in the 18-lap-race.

It was another successful weekend for the Northpoint Honda Squad consisting of 20-year-old Craig Jones and 19-year-old Cal Crutchlow at the second round of the British Supersport Championship at Thruxton Race Circuit. With a fourth and seventh place respectively the two youngsters were extremely content with their results and are looking forward to the third round at Mallory Park in a few weeks time.

The Mitsubishi Motors Motor Sports WRC crew of “Gigi” Galli and Guido D’Amore finished in the points in their second outing in Rally New Zealand, the fourth round of the FIA World Rally Championship. The Italian Lancer WRC05 duo finished eighth and claimed a driver and manufacturer points finish for the second time this season - Mitsubishi’s fourth consecutive points-scoring finish in 2005. Team-mates Harri Rovanperä and Risto Pietiläinen completed the final stage but were then withdrawn by the team on the road section back to Auckland with tire problems.

The second round of the 2005 Armajaro MSA British Historic Rally Championship moves the action to North Wales for the Astra Stages Historic Rally on Saturday 9 April.

Following a great start to the season on the Robin Hood Stages last month, an entry of almost 70 historic cars will take to the gravel stages of the Clocaenog and Aberhirnant forest complexes.

After debuting the new Fabia WRC 05 in Mexico the Škoda Motorsport World Rally Team remains outside Europe for round four of the World Rally Championship. Rally New Zealand (April 7-10) is the furthest event from the team’s Mladá Boleslav base in heart of Europe and for this second long-haul event of the season the team will be represented by Armin Schwarz/Klaus Wicha and Janne Tuohino/Mikko Markkula.

SEAT Sport UK is mounting a challenge for the BTCC Manufacturers' title in its second season of competition, as it prepares for the start of the 2005 Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship.

After nine race wins and finishing runners-up in the Teams' Cup last year with two drivers, a new SEAT Sport UK three-car squad returns to the BTCC in 2005 with Jason Plato, James Pickford and Luke Hines driving identical SEAT Toledo Cupras.

This will be the first time that a Peugeot 206RC has competed in the UK and driver Ellya Gold said "The RC has about 50bhp more than the 206 Grand Turisme I used in last years championship, so I am hoping to really mix it with the top Formula 2000 cars this year".

SEAT Sport UK driver Jason Plato will contest three rounds of the FIA World Touring Car Championship in a SEAT Sport Toledo Cupra.

The 37-year old driver will join the Barcelona-based SEAT Sport squad at Silverstone (rounds 5 and 6 on May 15th), Imola (rounds 7 and 8 on May 29th) and at Spa-Francorchamps (rounds 11 and 12 on July 30th), teaming up with regular SEAT Sport WTCC drivers Rickard Rydell (Sweden), Jorde Gené (Spain) and Peter Terting (Germany).

At lunchtime on both the Saturday and Sunday of the Festival, there will be high-speed action from the ex-Alesi Ferrari Formula 1 Grand Prix car from 1993 (F93A), owned and driven by Paul Osborn."The 3.5-litre V12 engines have their own sound, and I think the 1993 model is probably the loudest of them all.
