Mutiny Club Rally preview:

‘Battle is on for Mutiny Cup honours.’


This Saturday sees the new Motorsport Direct Cup make its third appearance in the UK rally calendar, as the Vauxhall Nova and Corsa men take to the fast and furious stage of the Mutiny Cub Rally. The rally is also the third round of the Kumho Clubman Rally Championship, which the Motorsport Direct backed Cup is an integral part of.

The Acropolis Rally (June 3-6) follows hot on the heels of another of the roughest gravel rallies in the FIA World Rally Championship and the challenge posed for the teams contesting the series will be as tough as ever. The event marks the debut competitive outing of the Mitsubishi Motors Motor Sports crew of “Dani” Solà/Xavier Amigo who usually drive a Group N Lancer and are current leaders of the FIA PWRC compete in the FIA WRC Acropolis in the Lancer WRC04. The Spanish pair will join regulars Gilles Panizzi/Hervé Panizzi in one of the oldest rallies in the championship and the only one to retain its historic name.

Flying through the hot and dusty conditions, the drivers were both proving their worth as top-level competitors, when, with only 8 stage miles remaining, Jennie-Lee experienced a major crash and Lorna Smith's Subaru Impreza suffered mechanical failure.

Chris Reid’s 205 Scholarship championship attempt faltered on this weekend’s Panaround Rally as the Aberdeen based driver crashed out in dramatic style.


The Panaround Rally was the 3rd round of the successful Peugeot 205 Scholarship which caters for the 1.9 derivative of the highly regarded Gti model and after a win on the previous event Chris had high hopes for a result. “We had an excellent run last time out and after recent testing I was becoming more and more confident with the cars handling and performance” explained 21 year old Chris “the added draw for me on this event was the fact we would be covering the same stages as the Kwik-Fit Pirelli British Rally Championship so we would hopefully be able to view how we faired against the highest level of competition in the country and soak up the fantastic atmosphere that an event of this quality generates”.

David Higgins (Caersws), driving a hired Hyundai, leads the International Rally of Wales at the end of day one in Dolgellau tonight. Despite coping with “‘horrendous” dusty conditions, Higgins was faster than 2002 rally winner Jonny Milner on three of today’s five stages. “Dust has been a nightmare,” said Higgins. “But that won’t be a problem tomorrow (Sunday) as we’ll be first through the stages. We had to stop twice in stage five to let it clear.”

The Roush Manx National Rally, round three of the Peugeot TOTAL 206 Super Cup, has stirred mixed feelings for Geordie driver Chris Moore. The first of two asphalt based rounds in this years Championship, saw his first retirement of the season when a drive shaft broke on the seventh stage. Chris who held fourth overall in the series going into round three, had carried out extensive testing and preparation prior to the event. A credible seventh overall on Epynt last weekend boosted Chris's confidence and himself and co-driver Roger Herron were confident of a strong finish.

Top-ten results eluded both of Team PSP's drivers on a weekend where the changeable weather made a lottery of chassis settings and tyre choices, as seen by the mixed results for many of the top runners in BTCC. On the bright side, BTCC rookie Fariqe Hairuman drove safely and consistently all weekend to record three solid race finishes, and Watson Smith, despite a down-on-power engine, added to the team's databank for damp and wet-weather chassis settings with best times close to the front runners.
